Plus an AVR that could do 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 is stupid money, for little benefit.Īm I mistaken anywhere above? Am I missing anything? Even if I wanted to buy an AVR, I'd want HDMI 2.1 / 4K 120Hz support, and the current HDMI 2.1 chipsets in AVRs are broken. Using the TV's smart apps or a streaming stick runs into issue 2 above, getting the audio into my speakers.ħ.

The only streaming service I use right now is Prime Video, but that doesn't support 4K on PC. I do have (some of) my personal media (CDs and DVDs) on a small Plex server.Ħ. Ripping discs seems like a viable option, still involves a bit of legwork though. From what I've read, directly playing back UHD Bluray discs may not be possible without an Intel CPU supporting SGX, but even if that's not the case, it's still not a great experience.ĥ. HDR support seems like a mess in Windows, but I guess it should be manageable even if I have to manually enable/disable/configure each time I were to watch something using it.Ĥ.

There's no eARC/ARC into a PC, PC sound cards can't decode 5.1 over SPDIF, and ARC/SPDIF is only limited 5.1 or stereo.ģ. There's no way to get 7.1 or better audio from an external device into the PC for playback through the PC's audio system. Atmos is only possible via HDMI out on a PC, period.Ģ. I wanted to upgrade/optimize for watching movies, but it seems like the classic PC / HTPC is pretty limited.ġ. Audio is analog out to discrete amps/speakers, 7.1. My current desktop/gaming PC is Ryzen 5000/RTX3000 based, with a 49" Sony X900E as the display.
